Chemicals: Care Guide

Clear, sparkling water entices you into your hot tub. To keep it that way, proper maintenance is essential. Water balance and sanitization ensure the pleasure comfort and safety of hot tub users and protect the hot tub and its equipment.

Balancing water is relatively simple. If the levels of pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness are not within the prescribed range, scale or corrosion can occur. Regular testing and adjustment of these factors to the proper levels will prevent damage to the spa surface and its equipment.

Bromine or chlorine sanitizers control bacteria in the spa water and help to oxidize and reduce the level of organics in the water. Your spa water has a lot to contend with, as organic materials are introduced into the water every time you use your spa. Bacteria, oils from lotions, cosmetics and skin particles are left behind in the spa. The regular use of Spa Perfect and non-chlorine shock will also help reduce the level of organic material in the water and allow your sanitizer to work more effectively.

Spa water also contains dissolved chemicals and salts. These, along with organic materials, form the total dissolved solids (TDS). TDS increase over time and reduce the efficiency of sanitizers and your spa care program. When the TDS level goes over 1500 ppm it's time to change your water. Moose Mountain Hot Tubs can test your water for the TDS level.
